KeNHA Issues Urgent Directive To Billboard and Advertising Owners Along Nairobi Highways

Share

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a firm directive ordering the removal of all illegal billboards, advertisements, businesses, and structures erected on road reserves along major national highways, particularly in Nairobi.

In a public notice released on November 25, the authority expressed alarm over what it termed as “continued encroachment onto road reserves along National Highways.”

KeNHA stated that these developments pose safety risks and violate national road management laws.

According to the notice, the agency reminded the public that the Kenya Roads Act, 2007, grants it full authority to regulate roadside structures.

The act empowers KeNHA to “control roadside developments and remove any illegal structures, billboards, advertisements, and directional signs within the KeNHA road reserves.”

30-Day Ultimatum Issued

The highways authority has given all individuals and businesses involved a 30-day window to clear unapproved structures.

KeNHA stated that “all persons with illegal structures, businesses, developments, including unapproved and unrenewed billboards, advertisements, and directional signs on road reserves are hereby required to remove them within thirty (30) days from the date of this notice.”

This ultimatum targets both long-standing and newly erected installations that lack proper approval or have expired licences.

Demolitions to Begin After Deadline

The notice warned that failure to comply would result in immediate enforcement.

KeNHA cautioned that “failure to comply will lead to enforcement action, including demolition and recovery of related costs, without further notice to the owners/agents of the said unapproved structures.”

This means affected businesses could incur losses through demolitions and subsequent cost surcharges imposed by the agency.

Public Advised to Seek Clarification

To avoid disputes, KeNHA encouraged affected parties to seek guidance.

The authority advised the public to contact its offices via toll-free lines 0800-211-244 and 0700423606, or email dg@kenha.co.ke.

The notice added that clarification can also be obtained by visiting the Road Reserve Department at KeNHA headquarters.
