Uproar After Kenyan Driver Working in Qatar Is Attacked While on Duty

Share

A Kenyan driver employed in Qatar is at the centre of public concern after a disturbing video surfaced online showing him being assaulted by a male passenger while on duty.

The incident, captured inside a vehicle, has triggered uproar among Kenyans and renewed debate over the safety of migrant workers in the Gulf.

According to accounts shared online, the driver was allegedly attacked during a ride, with the passenger appearing to grab him aggressively as the situation escalated into a physical struggle.

The footage as seen by hivileo.co.ke, shows the attacker as he seemed to be attempting to coerce the driver into inappropriate conduct.

In the video, the Kenyan is heard screaming for help as he fights to free himself.

He eventually manages to escape from the car, fleeing the scene while calling out loudly.

Online Reaction and Public Anger

The incident has generated widespread condemnation across Kenyan social media platforms, with users demanding justice and calling for enhanced protection for citizens working abroad.

One user posted a critical assessment of the circumstances, writing, “That doesn’t look like a Qatari, and unless he was heading to the airport to leave the country, Qatar is one of the worst places for a foreigner to attempt such behaviour. The legal consequences would be severe, especially on a public road.” — X user @Alex_gyst

Another commentator highlighted the driver’s response, stating, “His situational awareness is 7 out of 10. He sensed danger early. But his reaction is 2 out of 10. In that moment, response time can be the difference between life and death.” — @lokichar

A third reaction took a broader view on migration trends, arguing, “It’s unthinkable. There is no reason for a Black man to migrate to an Arab country. It’s insanity.” — @Mokpogode

Government’s Overseas Recruitment Drive

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection conducted a large-scale overseas recruitment exercise targeting Kenyans seeking employment in Dubai and Saudi Arabia.

The recruitment drive took place from October 29 to 31, 2025, at NITA Athi River and NITA Mombasa training centres.

Labour CS Dr. Alfred Mutua announced that the government, in partnership with licensed agencies, facilitated interviews for hundreds of positions in transportation, hospitality, security, logistics, and construction.

Opportunities in Dubai included 350 taxi drivers, 500 delivery riders, 300 warehouse workers, 150 security guards, cleaners, waitstaff, hotel housekeepers, and construction labourers.

Saudi Arabia offered 50 driver positions and 25 mechanic jobs, with age requirements ranging from 21 to 45 years.

Some positions required fluency in English or a minimum height, particularly for security roles.

Benefits and Outcome of the Program

Successful applicants received two-year renewable contracts, including free accommodation, meals, transport, and medical coverage.

The Ministry also guaranteed overtime pay as per UAE labour laws and 30 days of annual leave.

Dr. Mutua defended the initiative, describing it as part of the government’s commitment to providing meaningful overseas employment under regulated and fair conditions.

Hundreds of Kenyans were yet to be successfully placed, with many receiving on-the-spot job offers during the interviews.
