The Teachers Service Commission (TSC), in collaboration with the Social Health Authority (SHA), has announced a new medical scheme for educators, outlining an expanded range of healthcare benefits under the Mwalimu Comprehensive Medical Cover.
The cover, which becomes effective on 1st December 2025, is designed to enhance access to essential health services for teachers and their dependents nationwide.
The programme highlights multiple service areas that educators can rely on once the cover takes effect.
According to the announcement, the comprehensive package aims to ensure that teachers receive timely, high-quality medical attention, aligning with SHA’s mission of “Bima Bora, Afya Nyumbani.”

Among the major features of the new cover are both inpatient and outpatient medical services.
These will enable teachers to seek a wide range of treatments without the financial strain that often accompanies medical emergencies or regular hospital visits.
Additionally, maternity care has been included as part of the scheme’s benefits.
This ensures access to maternal health services for teachers and their families, supporting safe deliveries and related healthcare needs.
The package also incorporates chronic illness management, providing long-term support for conditions that require consistent monitoring and treatment.
Teachers will also access dental and optical services, expanding the scope of specialised care available under the cover.
These services position the scheme as a holistic health plan catering to both routine and specialised medical needs.

To address emergencies, the cover provides road and air evacuation services.
These are expected to facilitate swift medical response for teachers who may require urgent transfer to healthcare facilities.
The scheme also includes last expense benefits, offering financial support in the event of death, and overseas treatment for cases that need specialised care unavailable locally.
