Sonko, Mutua Feature Among 18 High-Profile Corruption Cases in Court

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and former Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) CEO Ezekiel Mutua are among the prominent individuals facing corruption cases in court this week.

In a notice on Sunday, November 30, the EACC listed 18 cases scheduled for hearing and mentioned in various courts between December 1 and 5.

The cases, which span recovery of public funds, forgery, conflict of interest, bribery, and fraudulent acquisition of public property, reflect the Commission’s intensified push to hold public officials accountable for economic crimes.

The cases include:

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and 21 others appear for mention, facing charges of conflict of interest and involvement in the purported embezzlement of Ksh24.1 million from the County Government of Nairobi.

Their case is scheduled for December 2 at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court.

The other major Mention is that of former Kenya Film Classification Board CEO Ezekiel Mutua and 12 others.

EACC is pursuing Kes22.6 million that it claims was paid in irregular amounts as salary and entertainment allowance.

EACC has mentioned Kiambu Governor Paul Kimani Wamatangi and other officials in a suit seeking recovery of Ksh813 million, alleged to be proceeds of corruption.

The case will be handled at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on December 2nd.

In still another Mention, Jecinter Adoyo Hezron, a former Senior Analyst at the Commission on Revenue Allocation, has been charged by EACC with committing fraud by obtaining Ksh15.2 million through forged academic certificates.

The case will be heard on December 2.

Other interesting Mentions are that of former Kitui County Executive Philip Mutinda Mumo, who is charged with the presentation of a forged degree, and that of Francis Xavier Kipkoskei Lagat, who is accused of using a forged KCSE certificate to get a job at Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company.

Hearings Highlight Fraud, Public Land Recovery and Bribery

EACC has also scheduled a series of Hearings this week, starting with Mzalendo Kibunjia in a suit to collect Ksh441.3 million that was said to be stolen at the National Museum of Kenya by falsely paying salaries to ghost workers.

In another Hearing, Robert Meme Inyingi faces charges of receiving a bribe of KSh20,000, with the case set for December 4 at the Machakos Law Courts.

A separate Hearing involving Jennifer Koinante is aimed at the recovery of public land in the Nanyuki Municipality, while another case against Edwin Gichobi centres on a conflict of interest in the award of a tender in Kirinyaga County.

Another Hearing listed by the commission involves Rubis Energy Kenya PLC, together and eight others, seeking recovery of public land that was initially owned by the Kenya Railways Corporation, but later allocated illegally.

The case shall be heard at the Milimani Environmental and Land Court on December 1.
