The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has issued an official clarification following widespread speculation over a viral video showing a convoy of SUVs driving into the restricted airside section of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The footage, which circulated widely on social media, triggered public concern over possible security breaches at Kenya’s busiest airport.

In a statement released on December 2, 2025, KAA said it was aware of the online reactions and sought to address what it termed “misconceptions” around the incident.

“Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) clarifies recent online reactions concerning a video showing a convoy of SUVs accessing restricted areas of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) tarmac,” the authority stated.

According to the airports regulator, the incident occurred on October 8, 2025, and involved the official motorcade of a visiting Prime Minister from an African country.

The foreign leader arrived at 1707 hours ahead of the 24th Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Summit hosted in Nairobi.

“The summit was attended by several Heads of State and other senior leaders from COMESA member states,” KAA noted.

Access Was Granted Under VVIP Protocol

KAA explained that the escort vehicles were allowed on the tarmac under strict security procedures reserved for high-level state guests.

“KAA confirms that all airside access for this VVIP protocol strictly followed established security procedures and regulations,” the statement emphasized.

The authority added that these arrangements are not unusual during major international events that attract dignitaries from around the world.

Similar movements, according to KAA, comply with global aviation safety requirements and are designed to ensure efficient and secure handling of visiting leaders.

Protocols Align With Aviation Security Standards

To dispel fears of unauthorized entry, KAA highlighted that VVIP airside access is managed through coordination with national security teams, diplomatic channels and airport operations personnel.

“Such protocols are standard at JKIA for international summits and comply fully with aviation security standards, prioritizing both operational integrity and dignitary safety,” the press release stated.
