Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has been removed from his position as the Senate Majority Whip.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced the decision during the Senate sitting on the afternoon of Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

“Honorable senators, via the letter dated December 2nd, I need correspondence from the Senate majority leader regarding changes in the Majority Party Leadership affecting the Office of Senate Majority Whip. From the correspondence, the minutes indicate that a resolution was passed to remove the Senate Majority Whip, Senator Dr. Boni Khalwale, in accordance with Standing Order 225,” Kingi said.

Kingi said the Kenya Kwanza Alliance has chosen Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli to succeed Khalwale as the new Senate Majority Whip.

“Standing order 228 provides that the speaker upon receipt of the decision, shall verify the correspondence received and deliver a communication to the Senate within 3 sitting days. With this days, I have verified the correspondence and can confirm the majority party has effected a change in the office of the Senate majority whip, and the new office holder with immediate effect is Senator David Wafula,” Kingi said.

Khalwale Warned

This comes after Khalwale supported DAP-K candidate Seth Panyako against UDA candidate David Ndakwa in the Malava by-election.

Earlier, Ruto’s close ally and Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei warned that Boni Khalwale will face punishment for openly defying the UDA Party’s decision.

Cherargei said Khalwale must pay for his “political sins” after opposing the party’s candidate in the recent Malava Constituency by‑elections.

He criticised Khalwale’s remarks against the UDA Party and the Kenya Kwanza administration, saying they cannot go unpunished.

“Senator Boni Khalwale of Kakamega County must pay for his political sins for challenging his sponsoring UDA Party in the recent Malava constituency by-elections by campaigning against our candidate. His contempt remarks against the UDA Party/Kenya Kwanza administration cannot go unpunished,” Cherargei said.

Serving as an Example

Cherargei stated that the party intends to make Khalwale an example to discourage members from undermining their own political party.

He added that UDA aims to restore political discipline and hygiene in line with the Political Parties Act.

“We are going to make him an example of not undermining your own political Party and bring back political hygiene under the Political Parties Act. To him we say Tawe & luwere subsequently,” he added.
