Senate Blocks Impeachment of Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo Again

Share

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo will remain in office after the Senate rejected the motion to impeach him.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi ruled that the threshold to remove him was not met at the county level, where 23 out of 35 MCAs voted to impeach him.

This time around, 23 MCAs voted to impeach Nyaribo, and the fight moved to the Senate for a final verdict.

MCAs disregarded affidavits from 12 absentee colleagues and allowed six present members to vote on behalf of some absentees, thereby reaching the required two-thirds threshold to pass the motion.

The motion was tabled by ward representative Julius Kimwomi Matwere of Bonyamatuta Ward, who charged Governor Nyaribo with abuse of office, gross misconduct, irregular appointments, and mismanagement of public funds.

Why Amos Nyaribo Was Impeached

Motion passed by the County Assembly, alleging Nyaribo violated constitutional provisions and misused his executive powers by commissioning a county “payroll audit”,  reportedly without authorisation from the statutory Office of the Auditor‑General.

The audit was allegedly initiated outside established legal frameworks, undermining the audit process mandated by law.

Nyaribo was further accused of illegal staff recruitment, irregular awarding of contracts, and irregularities tied to a multi-million shilling tender for county offices, a contract currently under investigation by the Ethics and Anti‑Corruption Commission (EACC).

Impeached Governors Since 2022

Nyaribo’s impeachment adds to a growing list of county chiefs ousted, or nearly so, in recent years since 2022.

Below are some of the notable county heads who have faced the wrath of the Senate and successfully shown the door.

Kawira Mwangaza (Meru County),  first impeached on December 30, 2022, and again in October 2023.

The third effort in August 2024 resulted in successful removal, upheld by the court in March 2025.

Kawira was overthrown, over allegations of constitutional violations, abuse of office, and misuse of public resources, not forgetting nepotism cases that frequented her administration.

Ferdinand Waititu (Kiambu County), removed in 2019 following corruption and land-grab allegations.

In 2025, he was convicted and jailed for graft.

Waititu has had several pleas; however, the court has maintained its stand for Waititu to pay approximately Ksh 52 million, or serve his sentence granted by the court.

Erick Mutai (Kericho County), impeached by the County Assembly in August 2025 over allegations of constitutional violations, abuse of office, and misuse of public resources.

If the Senate rules against Nyaribo, he will now become the eleventh governor to be impeached by MCAs since the onset of devolved governments in 2013.

Context: a continued power struggle

Nyaribo’s impeachment marks the third attempt by the Nyamira County Assembly to remove him from power since 2023.

The latest motion emerges amid controversial scrutiny.

The EACC recently raided the governor’s homes and county offices over a suspicious KSh 382 million tender.

Besides, MCAs accused the Governor of presiding over parallel “Bunge Mashinani” sessions that ignored formal legal procedures.

The previous two attempts in 2023 and 2024 reportedly failed due to an insufficient majority or internal divisions among MCAs.
