Chaos at Chesongoch Catholic Church as Missing Ksh 1.7 Million Disrupts Mass

Share

Drama unfolded at Chesongoch Catholic Church on Sunday after a routine Mass ended abruptly following tensions over the unexplained disappearance of Ksh 1.7 million.

The money is said to be proceeds from the sale of a parish vehicle, but its whereabouts sparked heated exchanges between parishioners and church officials.

The situation escalated when a list of individuals reportedly connected to the vehicle sale was read aloud before the congregation.

The announcement immediately triggered murmurs, with worshippers demanding clarity on why the funds had not been accounted for weeks after the sale.

The disruption forced the service to end earlier than planned, as frustrations mounted among congregants who insisted the parish leadership must provide answers.

Worshippers Demand Answers Over Missing Funds

A section of parishioners later walked out in protest, chanting that accountability and honesty must form the foundation of any institution, including religious ones.

Others remained behind, hoping leaders would step forward to explain how the decision to sell the vehicle was reached and what became of the proceeds.

Public Reactions Over Church Accountability

The incident spilled over to social media, where Kenyans expressed mixed reactions about the drama and the broader issue of financial transparency in religious institutions.

One Facebook user, Stephen Kiptoo, wrote: “Religion is a multibillion-dollar business industry. There’s a difference between religion and spirituality; which one is being taken seriously in our churches?”

Another user, Biy David, criticized church leadership practices, saying: “Some leaders just master the art of fleecing the church members. Too frequent exaggerated project contributions. Where possible, don’t corrupt salvation.”

Parish Leadership Yet to Issue a Statement

As of Sunday, December 7th, evening, parish officials had not issued a formal statement on the missing funds or the allegations raised during Mass.

Worshippers expect a comprehensive explanation in the coming days, noting that “trust within the community hinges on how the matter is handled.”
