Born in 1969 in Kinango, Kwale County, Denar Joseph Hamisi was a Kenyan politician whose life was marked by the continuous pursuit of education, a multi-sector career, and ultimately service in the National Assembly.

Hamisi began his formal education at Mombasa Baptist High School, where he completed both the Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE) and the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) between 1984 and 1989.

Hamisi invested in further education across several fields.

He studied tourism and travel operations at Kenya Utalii College, earning relevant diplomas in air transport and travel operations.

He then continued to United States International University–Africa (USIU), where he graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management, and followed that with a Master’s in International Business Administration (MIBA) in 2002.

Later, he broadened his academic credentials by studying law at the University of Nairobi, graduating in 2006 with an LLB.

Career Path and Public Service

Hamisi’s career spanned both private and public sectors.

In the early years after college, between 1994 and 1997, he worked at African Tourist Hotels as a manager, a role that likely drew on his tourism training.

He later moved into public service and governance.

Between 2007 and 2010, he served as Director at Coast Development Authority (CDA), overseeing development initiatives along Kenya’s coast.

Simultaneously, from 2007 to 2008, he was a Commissioner at the then Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK).

He later held senior positions in other public bodies; he was a director at Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) from 2009 to 2012, and at Kenya National Accreditation Services (KNAS) from 2011 to 2012.

Hamisi also contributed to academia by serving on the governing councils of his alma mater, the University of Nairobi (2013–2018), and later at Moi University (2021–2022).

He also served as Director at Flax International from 2013 until his passing.

Parliamentary Life and Politics

After the 2022 General Election, Hamisi was nominated to the National Assembly of Kenya under the banner of Amani National Congress (ANC).

In Parliament, he served on two important committees: the Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture and the Select Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities.
