Machakos Tightens Rules as Crackdown on Dumping Begins

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has announced a multi-pronged strategy to combat the county’s growing solid waste crisis, combining major resource investments with stringent enforcement measures targeting both illegal dumping and internal corruption.

Speaking to the media at her office on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, the governor made it clear that her administration is escalating efforts by deploying modern waste management equipment and significantly increasing the hiring of cleaning staff.

Blocking the External Waste Flow

Governor Wavinya explained the continuous challenge posed by external refuse, specifically highlighting the indiscriminate and illegal dumping of waste flowing from neighboring metropolitan counties, which is severely worsening the sanitation and aesthetic situation in the county.

She issued a directive to enforcement officers to deal with those found crossing into their county illegally to dispose of the waste.

“Sometimes we see waste brought from neighboring counties, and I want to appeal that any dumping lorry seen coming here to dispose of waste should be arrested, and the law should deal with them,” Wavinya insisted.

Zero Tolerance for Corruption and Illegal Sites

The County Boss also turned her attention inward, issuing a stern warning to county staff involved in illicit activities related to waste disposal.

She cautioned against personnel who have been illegally collecting money at dumpsites.

“Those who have been collecting money from the illegal dumpsites will soon be brought down, their days have come to an end,” Wavinya warned, stating that any staff found establishing unofficial revenue streams would face legal action.

Mandating Personal Responsibility

Governor Wavinya also placed a direct mandate on every resident and business owner in Machakos County to participate actively in waste management.

She stated that it will be mandatory for every premise to have appropriate waste receptacles at their place of work.

“I want to appeal to everyone staying here to ensure they have disposal bins in their areas, be it in shops or homesteads, to ensure we are clean,” Wavinya said.

She added, “Every person living in the county must have a waste disposal bin to ensure no waste lands at inappropriate areas.”
