The driver of a 65-seater Climax Coach bus involved in the fatal head-on collision that claimed the life of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo has broken his silence, giving a detailed account of the moments leading to the tragedy along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway.
Speaking shortly after the crash on morning of Saturday, December 13, 2025, the veteran driver said the accident occurred as he was travelling from Nairobi to Busia with 65 passengers on board.
He described the incident as sudden and unavoidable, insisting that the former lawmaker’s vehicle entered his lane at high speed.
According to the driver, the collision happened when Jirongo’s Mercedes-Benz emerged from a petrol station and attempted to overtake vehicles that were caught in traffic congestion on the single-carriage highway.
“Early in the morning, there was an accident between my bus and a Mercedes,” he said, adding, “I was coming from Nairobi heading to Busia.”
The 52-year-old driver, who has worked for the bus company for nearly eight years, explained that Jirongo joined the highway without giving way.
“The Mercedes was coming from a petrol station,” he narrated.
“The driver saw vehicles jammed on his side and decided to come to my lane, and that is what caused the accident,” he added.
He further explained that the former legislator attempted to overlap using the opposite lane, which was already occupied by oncoming traffic.
“He entered the road, noticed heavy traffic on his side, and chose to use the lane I was using. We then met head-on,” the driver said.
The bus driver maintained that he had very limited options in the seconds before the impact.
“I saw him overtaking, but there was nowhere for me to escape,” he stated, stressing that any attempt to swerve off the road would have endangered dozens of passengers.

Recounting the critical moment, the driver said he briefly considered veering off the road but quickly realised the consequences could have been disastrous.
“When I tried to save him, I felt the possibility of my vehicle rolling over,” he said.
“So I stopped and let him hit the bus,” the driver recounted.
He added that the bus was fully occupied while Jirongo was alone in the Mercedes-Benz.
“The car had only one person, the driver, while my bus had 65 passengers,” he said, emphasising the weight of responsibility he carried in that instant.
The driver said he only learned the identity of the victim after police officers arrived at the scene.
“I did not know it was Honourable Jirongo until the police came,” he stated, offering condolences to the former MP’s family and supporters.
