CHADEMA has intensified its demands, formally calling for the results to be annulled and the creation of a transitional government overseen by the UN for the general election on October 29, 2025.
The action takes place in the midst of a worsening political crisis after Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner of the country’s contentious presidential elections with almost 98% of the vote, following the exclusion of prominent CHADEMA opponents.
In a statement dated Thursday, December 11, 2025, CHADEMA’s leadership issued a formal statement denouncing the results, which saw the ruling party declare victory and denounce the administration as illegitimate.
CHADEMA’s deputy leader, John Heche, made an impassioned plea to the United Nations and African continental bodies to intervene, stating the post-election period has been marked by extreme state violence.
The opposition’s statement details a horrifying post-election landscape, alleging that state security forces and unidentified armed individuals are responsible for massive casualties.

Tanzania witnessed mass killings of more than 2,000 people and over 5,000 injured in the space of just one week,” claimed one party official, attributing the violence to “direct involvement of the state.
The government has defended the election results and the actions of its security forces.
The government has rejected the violence allegations, framing the unrest not as legitimate protests but as “violence” aimed at state overthrow.
President Hassan established a domestic Commission of Inquiry on November 20, but CHADEMA has unequivocally rejected it, citing a lack of faith in a domestic investigation.
The international community is now facing calls to apply stronger pressure, including possible targeted sanctions, to ensure accountability for the human rights violations that followed the disputed election.

Recognizing the lack of public legitimacy for the “blood-soaked government,” CHADEMA instructs all its leaders, members, and supporters to stand for justice and not to cooperate with any official of the “illegitimate government”.
The party is also expressing solidarity with all Tanzanian groups, including Gen-Z youth, religious leaders, and activists, who are demanding a new Constitution, free and fair elections, and an end to criminal acts against citizens.
CHADEMA now demands compensation for every family that lost a loved one and for all citizens who suffered permanent physical injuries, calling it a formal acknowledgment of state responsibility and an expression of accountability and remorse.
