Govt Acts After Viral Photos of Nairobi Apartment Pillar Collapse

The National Construction Authority (NCA) has ordered an immediate halt to the construction of a high-rise residential development along Peponi Road in Westlands after the building exhibited signs of structural failure.

In a statement on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, NCA Executive Director Eng. Maurice Akech confirmed that the authority received reports of the failure on Monday, December 15. A quality assurance team dispatched to the site verified the concerns, leading to an immediate suspension of all works and the cordoning off of the site.

The Authority received a report of structural failure at a proposed residential development located on L.R. No. NAIROBI BLOCK/179 (Original L.R. No. 1870/lI/165) along Peponi Road, Westlands, Nairobi on Monday, 15th December 2025,” NCA Executive Director Eng. Maurice Akech said in a report.

He added, “In furtherance of the Authority’s mandate and as aligned to Section 5 and Section 23 of the National Construction Authority Act 2011, a quality assurance team was immediately dispatched to the site for a compliance check.”

Safety Measures and Evacuations

The structure was designed to include three basement levels and thirteen suspended floors in order to ensure the safety of the public staying around the site.

“The development, which is under construction and designed to comprise three (3) basement levels and thirteen (13) suspended floors, exhibited signs of structural failure. Upon confirmation of the incident, all construction works were immediately suspended, and the site was cordoned off to safeguard the public,” Eng. Akech added.

The NCA has advised occupants of the neighborhood to temporarily vacate their premises as another way of ensuring safety as the technical teams conduct a comprehensive assessment on the project.

“The area surrounding the site is currently under the control of the National Disaster Management Unit [NDMU] and the National Police Service. As a precautionary safety measure, neighboring occupants have been alerted and advised to temporarily vacate, pending further technical assessments,” Eng. Akech said.

Investigation and Multi-Agency Response

A Multi-Sectoral Agencies Coordinating Committee (MSACC) has been constituted and is actively undertaking a detailed technical assessment to determine the structural integrity of the building and establish whether the structure can be safely salvaged or requires controlled demolition
