Another Accident Reported Along Nakuru–Naivasha Highway

Share

A fatal road accident involving a Dreamline bus and a lorry occurred at Magina near Kijabe Junction, triggering a major traffic snarl-up along the busy Nakuru–Naivasha highway.

The collision, which happened on the dawn of December 18, left motorists stranded for hours as emergency responders worked to clear the wreckage and restore movement on the key transport corridor linking the Rift Valley to Nairobi.

Footage as seen by hivileo.co.ke, shows a severe impact, with debris scattered across the carriageway and traffic grinding to a standstill in both directions.

As of the time of publication, the authorities had not issued a report on the incident.

The incident quickly sparked debate online, with road users and safety advocates calling for urgent action ahead of the festive season when long-distance travel increases.

One X user, @ignyharaz2, wrote: “Magina centre kijabe, dreamline bus was involved in a terrible accident a few hours ago. For a moment, NTSA and the Ministry of Transport should ban night travel for long distances this festive season, they’re always in a rush to beat the arrival time.”

The sentiment shows growing concern over night travel pressures, tight schedules, and driver fatigue.

Public Outcry Over Speed and Enforcement

Another X user, @_shekhe, blamed lax enforcement, stating: “These Buses forgot about speed limits long ago. Speed governors are never in service, why because the police and NTSA officers are only interested in what the driver gives.”

The comments underscore persistent allegations that speed limits and vehicle safety systems are not consistently enforced, particularly on highways known for high-speed travel.

Recent Fatal Accidents Raise Alarm

Since the last quarte of the year, several fatal road accidents have been reported on major highways across the country, including sections of the Nakuru–Naivasha route and other long-distance corridors.

These incidents have often involved buses, trailers, and commercial vehicles, with factors such as speeding, fatigue, poor visibility at night, and mechanical failures frequently cited by investigators in past cases.

The cumulative effect has heightened public anxiety about road safety during peak travel periods.

Ten people from one family in Nyamira County died Sunday night of December 14, in a road accident along the Oyugis–Sondu Road in Homa Bay County, police confirmed.

The crash, involving a cement-laden lorry and a Nissan vehicle, occurred at around 8 p.m. while the victims were returning from a wedding in western Kenya.

The tragedy came a day after another accident killed eight people in Nyamira, pushing the weekend death toll to 18 in the homabay- Kisii County alone.
