Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) Renson Igonga has directed a thorough probe into the death of gospel musician Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, popularly known as Betty Bayo.

This comes following a formal complaint from her family alleging suspicious circumstances that led to her death.

The office directed the officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to report progress within seven days.

In the letter, Bayo’s family claimed it was denied access to an autopsy report, despite requesting one after the death of their daughter.

They were never given Betty’s medical records or informed about the treatment she may have been receiving before she died.

The ODPP stated in a press release on December 18, 2025, that the family had expressed “concerns and suspicions” about the deceased’s death on December 9 through their legal representative.

According to the family, Mbugua had no known underlying health conditions that would explain a sudden death.

The family further questioned the hurried manner in which the burial was conducted, stating it raises suspicion that crucial details surrounding her death may have been concealed.

“In view of these concerns… the DPP has directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to conduct thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death and to submit the pursuant file for review and appropriate action,” the statement read.

The family’s complaint highlights two primary areas of concern that have prompted the intervention of the country’s top prosecutor:

Medical History: The family asserts that the deceased was in good health before her passing.

Transparency: The family has reportedly been “denied access to the post-mortem report,” leading to fears of a potential cover-up or foul play.

On November 10, 2025, Betty Bayo passed away at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

The family has since contested the KNH officials’ claim that she died from internal bleeding brought on by mild acute leukemia.
