Moi University has revealed a one-time “cleanup” graduation ceremony for all students who have finished their coursework but failed to graduate in prior years, in an audacious attempt to pay off long-standing academic debts and streamline its registrar’s office.

Prof. Khaemba Ongeti, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Research, and Extension, revealed on a comment on his official Facebook page that the initiative is designed to provide a final opportunity for thousands of learners currently stuck in academic limbo.

“Yes, yes. But we must get the numbers. We shall seek to enlist everyone out there who failed to graduate since… After that, we shall deregister all who have failed to earn a degree and close the door to our past. Welcome,” Prof. Khaemba Ongeti replied to a question concerning the cleanup.

Many “stagnant” students, those who may have completed their courses years or even decades ago but never paid their fees, turned in their final projects, or applied to graduate, have been a problem for the university.

Moi University, over the recent years have been struggling with a deepening crisis marked by falling student numbers, unpaid staff salaries, and heavy reliance on government support, raising concerns about the institution’s long-term stability.

Student enrolment plunged from 48,000 in 2015 to approximately 21,000 currently, a decline that has reduced tuition income and intensified financial pressures.

In 2023, Moi University announced that it was facing a massive budget shortfall, with the institution unable to meet its operational expenses.

With government funding increasingly tied to performance and enrolment numbers, the university has found itself caught in a vicious cycle of underfunding, leading to poor facilities, outdated learning materials, and diminished faculty motivation.

As a result, many students have opted to seek education at private universities or abroad, further contributing to Moi University’s declining enrolment figures.
