The Ministry of Education, through the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), has officially released the list of approved textbooks for Grade 10.

The announcement, made on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, marks a milestone in the national rollout of Senior School under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), whose first cohort is supposed to report in January for Grade 10.

Following the recent release of Senior School placement results, the focus has shifted to academic preparation with the transfers of institutions going on on the KJSEA portal.

The newly approved materials are designed to support the 2026 cohort, the first group of CBC learners to enter the three-year Senior School cycle.

According to the KICD notice, these resources cover all academic pathways, ensuring that students have access to standardized content regardless of their specialization.

Navigating the Three Pathways

Under the CBC framework, Senior School is structured around three main pathways tailored to student interests and career goals:

STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (including Pure Sciences and Technical Studies).

Social Sciences: Humanities, Languages, and Business Studies.

Arts and Sports Science: Physical Education, Music, and Creative Arts.

In line with recommendations from the Presidential Working Party on Educational Reforms (PWPER), the learning load for Grade 10 has been refined. Students will now focus on seven subjects in total.

Of these, four are compulsory core areas for every learner:

•  English
•  Kiswahili (or Kenya Sign Language)
•  Core Mathematics
•  Community Service Learning (CSL)

The remaining three subjects are electives chosen from the student’s specific pathway, allowing for deeper specialization before they transition to tertiary education or the workforce.

Preparing for Transition

The KICD emphasized that Senior School (typically for learners aged 16–18) is designed to cultivate “engaged, empowered, and ethical citizens.”

The government has urged parents and schools to refer only to the official list of publishers which include KLB, Oxford, Moran, and Longhorn, among others to ensure they purchase the correct curriculum-aligned materials.
