Former Shinyalu MP Daniel Liula Khamasi has passed away at 79

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa announced the passing of Khamasi, expressing deep sorrow over the loss.

In his statement, Barasa described the late MP as a committed servant whose contributions to Shinyalu will be remembered.

“I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Hon. Daniel Khamasi, former MP for Shinyalu,” Barasa said.

He extended heartfelt condolences to Khamasi’s family and the people of Shinyalu.

“He was a dedicated servant whose contribution to Shinyalu will be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Shinyalu. May his soul rest in peace,” he added.

COFEK Secretary General  Stephen Mutoro said, “Kakamega is in deep mourning — 3 former MPs dead in just two weeks. From Jirongo to Kibunguchy, and now Daniel Lyula Khamasi of Shinyalu.”

Daniel Khamasi Terms in Parliament

Khamasi was a Kenyan politician who served as the Member of Parliament for Shinyalu Constituency in Kakamega County.

He was first elected in 1997 on a Ford‑Kenya ticket and was re‑elected in 2002 on a NARC ticket, serving two consecutive terms in the National Assembly.

He was later succeeded in office by the late Charles Lilechi Lugano after the 2007 elections.

Cyrus Jirongo’s Death

His death comes after former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo died on December 13, 2025, in a fatal road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway at Karai, when his vehicle collided head‑on with a passenger bus.

An autopsy confirmed that he died from severe blunt force trauma sustained in the crash.

His body was later returned to his Kitale home ahead of burial at his Lumakanda homestead on December 30, 2025.

Jirongo was succeeded in his first parliamentary term (1997–2002) by Enoch Wamalwa Kibunguchy, who later served in both Lugari and Likuyani before his own passing in December 2025.

Jirongo was also succeeded in a later term (2007–2013) by Ayub Savula.
