Traffic Police Officers Arrested in Festive Season Anti-Bribery Crack-down

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has intensified its festive season with anti-bribery operations, arresting two traffic police officers in Muranga and Mtwapa towns, who were allegedly asking and accepting bribes as they stopped motorists along major road networks.

The Commission revealed that the arrests took place on December 30, 2025, following intelligence-led surveillance prompted by public complaints.

EACC said the operations are also part of a larger country-wide campaign against the issue of corruption on the main roads during the holiday season.

“These operations form part of the Commission’s crackdown on bribery and corruption in major roads the country over, particularly during the festive period.”

Murang’a Operation Yields Cash Recovery

After a premeditated surveillance exercise in the busy Kenol-Muranga Road, the EACC officers in a raid of the Murang’a Traffic Base arrested Police Constable Kelvin Mwangi.

The Commission alleged that it had received several complaints from members of the public claiming rampant bribery by traffic officers along the route.

Upon searching the suspect, Ksh 6,450 in denominations of Ksh 50, 100 and 200 was recovered believed to have been collected within a two-hour period.

During the operation, his colleague, who was identified as Police Constable Mathew Osike was able to escape arrest.

Suspect Released on Cash Bail

PC Mwangi was taken to the EACC Central Regional Offices where he was processed and subsequently booked after being arrested.

He was later released on cash bail pending the conclusion of investigations.

During the same operation, EACC officers disrupted another suspected bribery collection area in the Kerugoya-Kutus Road around the Bekam area, whereby the traffic officers allegedly fled into bushes abandoning official police attire.

Coast Operation Targets Mombasa-Malindi Highway

In a separate operation at the Coast, EACC detained Police Corporal Haroun Mazera Chamutu who works in Mtwapa Traffic Base on allegations that he is demanding bribes from motorists along the Mombasa-Malindi Highway.

Upon his arrest, officers recovered Ksh13,750 in different denominations, suspected to be proceeds of bribery.

He was escorted to the EACC Upper Coast Regional Office in Malindi for statement recording and further processing.

EACC Steps Up Surveillance and Public Appeal

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to scaling intelligence gathering and surveillance, especially in essential public services and sectors prone to corruption.

EACC also indicated that the aim is to facilitate integrity, accountability, and professionalism in the public service.

The Commission also encouraged the citizens to be more vigilant and report corruption through its official reporting channels.
