UPDATE: The area has been cordoned off as the National Disaster Management Unit, Nairobi City County, the National Police Service, and the Kenya Red Cross continue search and rescue operations.
Four individuals are trapped after a 16-storey building under construction collapsed along Muhoho Road in Nairobi’s South C area.
The four include two watchmen and two passers-by who were in the vicinity when the structure came down.
Rescue operations at the collapsed building in South C have been temporarily suspended following fears that an adjacent structure might also come down.
A building under construction has collapsed in South C, off Muhoho road, next to South hospital in Nairobi.
In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross said the building collapsed on the morning of Friday, January 2, in the Shopping Centre area of South C, Nairobi County.
Kenya Red Cross, a multi-agency response team, is on site managing the situation.
“Early this morning, a building under construction collapsed in the Shopping Centre area of South C, Nairobi County. A multi-agency response team is on site managing the situation,” Kenya Red Cross said.

Reports indicate that the 16-storey building under construction collapsed suddenly, sending a huge cloud of dust into the air and blocking nearby roads.
Authorities confirmed the incident, saying the building collapsed while construction work was ongoing. They had not established the exact cause of the collapse by the time of reporting.
Emergency teams, including police officers, firefighters, medical staff, and other rescue personnel, are at the scene responding to the incident.

Authorities have not yet confirmed how many workers were at the site or whether the collapse caused any casualties.
The incident adds to a growing number of building collapses reported across Kenya.
Officials have repeatedly cautioned property developers against flouting safety regulations set by the National Construction Authority (NCA) and county governments.
