How to Register a Marriage in 2026

Marriage is an institution that brings together a couple who stay together and start a family.

In Kenya, the following marriages are recognized for civil registration:

Kenya recognizes three main types of marriages for civil registration:

  • Civil Marriage
  • Christian Marriage
  • Customary Marriage

Therefore, this article reviews how you can register for marriage.

1. Civil Marriage Registration

Civil Marriage as a type of marriage that is conducted by the Registrar of Marriages at the legally designated areas eg at the Attorney General’s office.

Requirements Needed to Register Civil Marriage

  • Both partners must be 18 years and above
  • Original and copies of ID cards or passports
  • Passport-size photos
  • Birth certificates

However, when the person was already married, he/she is required to present a divorce decree or death certificate of the former spouse.

For a foreigner, submit a valid Visa and Certificate of No Impediment from home country

Step-by-step Guide

Applicant is required to file a Notice of marriage that will last for 21 days to be ready.

Here, you are required to visit the eCitizen portal, the Attorney General’s office, or the Registrar of Marriages to apply, and you will pay KSh 600.

Book the marriage date and the venue of your choice and pay the required amount.

The ceremony will be officiated by the Registrar and after that marriage certificate will be issued.

2. Christian Registration

It is a type of marriage that is conducted in church and presided over by licensed marriage ministers.

What is Required

  • Conducted by licensed ministers in licensed churches.
  • A couple must give written notification to the Registrar through the church.
  • Both partners must be 18+, with IDs or passports.

Steps Involved to Register

You can access the complete Notice of Marriage through the church or on the eCitizen portal.

Marriage will be conducted in the church after 21 days.

The minister fills the Marriage Certificate (Form 1, 2, or 3).

Finally, the church submits the certificate to the Registrar for official registration.

3. Customary Marriage Registration

It is a marriage conducted based on the traditions, values, and customs of Kenyan communities and is recognized under the Marriage Act, 2014.

Requirements

  • Both spouses must be Kenyan citizens.
  • Evidence that the customary rites were performed (e.g., dowry ceremony).
  • ID copies, photos, and witness statements.

Steps Involved

The marriage ceremony is officiated according to the community’s customs.

Apply for registration on eCitizen within 6 months.

Attach the required documents and pay the amount that is required.

You may be invited for an interview.

Registrar issues a Customary Marriage Certificate.
