Kenya’s former Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Water, and Natural Resources, Prof. Amb. Judi Wakhungu, has been appointed to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) International Board of Trustees, marking a significant milestone for Kenya’s environmental leadership on the global stage.

WWF-Kenya announced the appointment, describing it as a proud moment for the country and a recognition of Prof. Wakhungu’s outstanding contribution to environmental governance both locally and internationally.

“WWF-Kenya is proud to celebrate the appointment of Kenya’s former Minister for Environment, Water & Natural Resources, Prof. Amb. Judi Wakhungu, to the WWF International Board of Trustees,” the organisation said in a statement.

Prof. Wakhungu served as Cabinet Secretary during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure, a period widely regarded as transformative for Kenya’s environmental policy framework.

During her time in government, she championed and oversaw the implementation of landmark environmental laws, including the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act of 2013, the Forest Conservation and Management Act of 2015, and the Climate Change Act of 2016.

She also played a central role in the government’s bold 2017 decision to impose a ban on single-use plastic carrier bags, a policy that positioned Kenya as a global leader in the fight against plastic pollution.

Distinguished Diplomatic and International Career

Beyond her Cabinet role, Prof. Wakhungu has had a distinguished diplomatic career, serving as Kenya’s Ambassador to France, with accreditation to the Holy See, Portugal, Serbia, and Monaco.

A trained geologist, she has also held several high-level international positions, including serving on the Scientific Advisory Board of the United Nations Secretary-General, working as an Energy Adviser to the World Bank, and serving as Vice-President of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).

Her contributions have earned her prestigious global honours, among them the Oceans Award and the Clark R. Bavin Award, recognising her leadership in conservation and environmental policy.

Strengthening WWF’s Global Mission

WWF-Kenya noted that Prof. Wakhungu’s experience in public policy, diplomacy, and environmental governance will be a major asset to the organisation as it advances its global conservation mission.

“Her expertise in public policy, diplomacy, and environmental governance will further strengthen WWF’s mission as we work with partners worldwide to secure a future where people and nature thrive,” said Jackson Kiplagat, Chief Executive Officer of WWF-Kenya.

A Proud Moment for Kenya

Prof. Wakhungu’s appointment to the WWF International Board of Trustees highlights Kenya’s growing influence in global environmental leadership and reflects the impact of policies implemented during her time in office under President Uhuru Kenyatta.

As WWF continues to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable development worldwide, her presence on the Board places Kenya at the heart of global conservation decision-making.
