A section of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders held a high-level meeting on Thursday, January 8, amid growing calls for sweeping changes in the party’s leadership, with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino openly demanding the convening of a National Delegates Convention (NDC).
The meeting brought together influential figures, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, Turkana South MP Hon. Namoit, Senator Catherine Mumma, Hon. Millie Odhiambo, Ruth Odinga, Hon. Reuben Ndolo, former Attorney General Amos Wako, Babu Owino, and several other party members.
ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna hinted at the significance of the gathering through a cryptic social media post listing the attendees and declaring: “Sit. Talk. Tumeanza.”
Babu Owino used the moment to amplify calls for internal democracy and renewal within ODM, insisting that the party must urgently convene an NDC to chart its future direction.
“We want ODM to call for NDC. It’s time to take over the Party Leadership,” Babu said in a strongly worded statement, signalling that the party’s grassroots want a bigger say in decision-making.

In remarks that quickly ignited debate within political circles, Babu positioned himself as a central figure in ODM’s next chapter, invoking Raila Odinga’s long-standing leadership legacy.
“Baada ya Baba ni Babu,” he said, adding the catchy lines, “Babu kwa sababu. Bila Babu tabu,” a slogan that he used to mean that he should take over after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

While Sifuna did not disclose details of the meeting’s agenda, his message suggested that discussions on the party’s future had officially begun.
Political observers interpret the meeting as a possible precursor to broader consultations that could reshape ODM’s leadership and strategy ahead of future elections.
As pressure mounts from within, all eyes are now on ODM’s top organs to see whether they will heed the calls for an NDC and open the door to a new phase in the party’s political journey.
