Kenya Railways Suspends Commuter Train Services

Kenya Railways has announced the temporary suspension of the Limuru Commuter train.

In a statement, Kenya Railways said the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service train that normally plies the Nairobi Central Station–Limuru route will not operate tomorrow, January 9, 2026, due to unavoidable circumstances.

The suspension affects both the morning and evening services.

“The Nairobi Commuter Rail Service train that normally plies the Nairobi Central station to the Limuru route in the morning and evening will not run tomorrow, January 9, 2026, due to unavoidable circumstances,” reads part of the statement.

Kenya Railways said the service will resume on Monday, January 12, 2026, and sincerely apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Kenya Railways Trains

Kenya Railways operates two main networks: the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) linking Mombasa to Nairobi and Naivasha, offering express and inter-county services, and the historic Metre-Gauge Railway (MGR) extending from Nairobi to the Ugandan border, alongside extensive Nairobi Commuter Rail (NCR) services with routes like Syokimau, Embakasi, and Limuru, connecting suburbs with the city center.

Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) – Madaraka Express

Mombasa – Nairobi – Naivasha: Connects Kenya’s main port (Mombasa) to the capital (Nairobi) and further to Suswa/Naivasha.

Services: Offers both faster Express trains and Inter-County trains with more stops (Mariakani, Voi, Emali, etc.).

Metre-Gauge Railway (MGR) & Extensions

Mombasa to Malaba (Uganda Border): A traditional network used for freight and some passenger services.

Nairobi to Nanyuki: A key extension of the older network, serving towns like Ruiru and Limuru.
Nairobi Commuter Rail (NCR)

Key Routes

  • Nairobi Central – Syokimau: Connects to the SGR Terminus.
  • Nairobi Central – Embakasi Village: A vital link for eastern Nairobi residents.
  • Nairobi – Limuru/Kijabe: Serving western suburbs like Kikuyu.
  • Nairobi – Ruiru/Kenyatta University: Serves northern suburbs, with new stations like Mwiki, Githurai.

Services:

Uses DMUs (Diesel Multiple Units) for efficient city travel with frequent stops.

Mombasa Commuter Rail: Recently launched, connecting Miritini, Changamwe, Shimanzi, and Mazeras.

Bus Services: Kenya Railways also provides connecting bus services in Nairobi.
