A family in Enchoro village, Nyamira County, is demanding justice following the death of their kin weeks after he was allegedly assaulted by a government administrator.
The deceased, 39-year-old Erik Mokaya, is said to have sustained serious injuries in December after an alleged confrontation with the area Assistant Chief over claims that he was transporting illicit brew.
According to the family, Mokaya was accosted while riding his motorcycle and allegedly violently assaulted, leaving him with critical injuries that later proved fatal.
Medical records indicate that Mokaya died from blunt force trauma to the head, which resulted in a fractured skull.
Speaking to the media, Mokaya’s widow gave a harrowing account of the incident, accusing the Assistant Chief and members of the local Nyumba Kumi initiative of participating in the assault.
“He hit the leg of my husband, making him fall. Then those from Nyumba Kumi started punching him as they jumped on him,” she said.
She further alleged that the Assistant Chief, identified as Richard Gichana, also turned violent against her and their child when she attempted to intervene.
“When I tried to help my husband, he attacked me and even hit my son,” she added.

A post-mortem examination has since confirmed that Erik Mokaya died from a skull fracture caused by consistent blunt force trauma to the head, findings that the family says corroborate their claims of assault.
However, the accused Assistant Chief has strongly denied the allegations, dismissing claims that he assaulted Mokaya or his family.
He maintains that Mokaya fled the scene and may have sustained the injuries elsewhere.
“We met with them, and the man suddenly left his motorcycle, and the illicit brew slipped,” he said.
“As I tried to hold it from falling, the wife pushed me back, causing her blouse to come off, and the man ran away.”

The family is now calling on authorities to conduct an independent and thorough investigation into the incident, insisting that justice be served for their late kin.
Residents and human rights activists have also urged accountability, citing concerns over alleged abuse of power by local administrators.
