Profile of Justice Oscar Angote, Eyeing a Court of Appeal Judge Position

Justice Oscar Amugo Angote is a distinguished Kenyan jurist currently serving as the Presiding Judge of the Environment and Land Court (ELC).

He is a key figure in Kenya’s specialized judiciary, known for his expertise in environmental law and property rights.

Justice Angote is one of the pioneer Judges of the Environment and Land Court, having been appointed as such on 3rd October, 2012. Upon his appointment, he was posted to Malindi, where he worked from November 2012 to December, 2016.

In January 2017, he was transferred to the Environment and Land Court, Machakos, where he was stationed as a single Judge until August, 2021, when he was transferred to Milimani in Nairobi.

Current Role & Career Path

Justice Angote was elected as the Presiding Judge of the ELC on July 17, 2022, by a college of his peers. In this capacity, he supervises the operations of the Environment and Land Courts across Kenya while continuing to adjudicate cases.

  • Appointed to the Bench: October 3, 2012 (One of the pioneer judges of the ELC).
  • Previous Stations: He has served in Malindi (2012–2016), Machakos (2017–2021), and the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi.
  • Recent Developments: In late 2025, he was notably shortlisted by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for the position of Judge of the Court of Appeal.

Upon his admission to the bar as an advocate, he practiced law as a litigation counsel in the firms of Kiogora Mutai & Company Advocates and Ndung’u Njoroge & Kwach Advocates. He then joined the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission in the year 2007 in the Asset Recovery Department.

While at the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission, he instituted and prosecuted civil cases across the country to recover illegally acquired public land.
