US President Donald Trump has hinted at a possible invasion of Iran amid growing protests against the regime of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In a statement issued on his Truth Social platform on Saturday evening, January 10, 2026, the US president said his administration was willing to offer support to demonstrators in Iran.
“Iran is looking at freedom, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!” Trump said.
Trump Hints at Invading Iran
Trump’s remarks were echoed by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a longtime critic of Iran’s leadership, who said the Iranian people’s “long nightmare is soon coming to a close.”
The president’s statement came a day after he warned the Iranian administration that the US government would respond forcefully if the death toll from the protests continued to rise.
Speaking during a news conference with oil executives in the East Room of the White House on Friday, January 9, 2026, Trump issued a stern warning.
“I have said very clearly and very firmly that if they start killing people, as they have done in the past, we will take action. We will hit them very hard, right where it hurts the most,” he said.
Trump also described the situation in Iran as “pretty incredible,” noting that protesters appeared to be taking control of some cities in a way that seemed impossible just weeks earlier.

Elsewhere, Iran’s Prosecutor-General Mohammad Movahedi Azad reiterated threats against protesters, warning they would face charges of moharebeh and be tried as “enemies of God.”
Moharebeh is a crime under Iranian law punishable by the death penalty.
The prosecutor-general said the charge would apply to “rioters and terrorists” who damaged property, undermined security, or assisted such acts.
Tehran Prosecutor Ali Salehi issued a similar warning on Friday after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused protesters of acting on behalf of Trump.
He labelled the demonstrators “vandals and rioters” and described them as “mercenaries for foreigners”.
He vowed that the Islamic Republic would “not back down” in the face of what he described as sabotage.
The demonstrations, now in their second week, began on December 28, 2025, over economic collapse and have since spread to all 31 Iranian provinces.

Internet Blackout
The threats came as the regime imposed a nationwide internet and phone blackout.
The primary trigger for the unrest was the collapse of the Iranian rial, which plunged to a record low of more than 1.4 million per US dollar in late 2025.
Prices of basic staples such as chicken and cooking oil surged overnight, prompting traders in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar to launch a strike that helped ignite the wider protest movement.
