Medical Negligence Alleged as 17-Year-Old Suffers Severe Injuries at Hospital in Nairobi

Share

Officials from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) have launched investigations into an incident in which a 17-year-old girl was left with severe wounds following a suspected case of medical negligence at a private hospital in Kiamaiko, within Nairobi’s Kariobangi estate.

The minor, identified as Tracy Akinyi, has since been transferred to Kenyatta National Referral Hospital, where she is currently receiving specialized medical care.

What was meant to be a routine medical procedure reportedly escalated into a life-threatening complication.

According to Tracy, she was rushed into surgery after doctors informed her that her appendix was “rotten” and required immediate removal.

She claims the procedure was conducted without her mother’s consent.

“I came to Al-Basrah, and they told me I had to go to the theatre because my appendix was rotten.

My mum didn’t sign anything.

I was taken directly to the theatre, and the operation went badly,” Tracy said.

She further alleges that her condition worsened after the surgery, forcing doctors to conduct a second operation that also failed to improve her health.

Claims of Poor Post-Surgical Care

Medical records reviewed by authorities reportedly indicate delays in critical decision-making and failure to follow proper medical protocols.

Tracy claims she went for five days without proper wound dressing, leading to further infection.

“Anytime they were doing the dressing, they were cutting the wound, and it was being exposed outside,” she recounted.

She is now undergoing treatment for both physical injuries and psychological trauma at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Hospital Denies Wrongdoing

Al-Basrah Hospital management has denied any culpability, insisting that standard medical procedures were followed.

The facility claims Tracy’s mother signed a consent form before leaving the hospital while the patient’s condition was deteriorating.

“When she requested to leave, she was informed to sign a consent because she was leaving her daughter behind and her vitals were slowly deteriorating,” hospital management said.

However, Tracy disputes this claim, alleging that documents were tampered with.

Minor Appeals for Justice

Visibly distressed, Tracy says the ordeal has deeply affected her life, keeping her out of school and in constant pain.

“I should be in school.

I can’t eat properly.

I’m in critical pain.

These people have tampered with my life,” she said, appealing for help.

DCI, KMPDC Launch Joint Investigation

A formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Tracy Akinyi’s treatment has now been officially initiated.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), working alongside KMPDC, the regulatory body mandated to enforce professional standards and discipline medical practitioners, has confirmed that those found culpable will face the full force of the law.

Authorities say the investigation will establish whether there was negligence, consent violations, or professional misconduct in the handling of the minor’s treatment.
