Tuskys, once one of Kenya’s largest retail chains, collapsed mainly due to mounting debts, cash-flow problems, unpaid suppliers, poor corporate governance, and aggressive expansion financed through short-term borrowing.
The retailer also struggled with rent arrears and supplier boycotts, which led to empty shelves and store closures.
The chain began facing public financial distress around 2020, with suppliers withdrawing stock, branches closing gradually and staff layoffs.
It was officially placed under liquidation on May 31, 2023, when the High Court Judge Justice David Majanja ruled there was no hope of rescue after a three-year battle with creditors.
