Explanation Of KUCCPS Cluster Points And How They Are Calculated

Share

In Kenya, securing a spot in a university degree program is not just about having a high mean grade; it is about the Weighted Cluster Points (WCP).

KUCCPS is able to calculate the cluster points through the automated placement system after obtaining KCSE examination performance data, including performance indices (PI) for each student, from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).

While your KCSE mean grade determines if one is eligible for university (C+ and above), the cluster points determine which specific course a student can actually study.

By understanding and applying the weighted cluster point formula, students can better navigate their university admission process and select courses that align with their academic strengths and career aspirations.

What Are Cut-Off Points?

Cut-off points act as the “entry mark” for a degree program, representing the weighted cluster points of the final student admitted in a specific year.

These points are calculated based on your performance in four subjects relevant to your course, combined with your overall KCSE aggregate.

Because they are determined by student competition and seat availability, cut-off points fluctuate annually; if a year has exceptionally high grades or fewer slots, the cut-off will naturally rise.

Cut-off Points and Weighed Cluster Points

Weighted cluster points are a KCSE examination graduate’s computed performance in four subjects required for admission to a given degree programme against that of the best candidates in the particular KCSE examination year.

It is based on cluster subject requirements and the overall performance of a candidate. The points are computed to three decimal places to reduce the chances of applicants tying on points.

Cut-off points are the weighted cluster points of the last competitively placed student in a given degree programme.

How to Calculate Cluster Points

To determine your eligibility for university programs, you will need to calculate your weighted cluster points using the following formula:

Where:

C = Weighted cluster points

r = sum of points from the four cluster subjects

R = maximum possible points from those subjects (48)

t = your total grade points

T = maximum grade points possible (84)

According to a report by KUCCPS, students are advised not to attempt to calculate their cluster points as doing so would result in incorrect points.

Instead, they should check their respective weighted cluster points as readily computed and provided in your KUCCPS portal.

KUCCPS is able to calculate your cluster points through the automated placement system after obtaining KCSE examination performance data, including performance indices (PI) for each student, from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).

Individual secondary school graduates are not provided with the PI, hence they cannot calculate their weighted cluster points.
