The Democrats for Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has issued a statement following the defection of Juja MP George Koimburi from Gachagua’s camp to President William Ruto’s camp.
In a statement dated Thursday, January 15, 2026, the party distanced itself, saying Koimburi was never a member of DCP.
“The attention of the DCP Party has been drawn to a statement made by Juja Member of Parliament Hon. George Koimburi purporting to have defected from the DCP Party. Let it be known that Hon. Koimburi has never been a member of the party and has never been involved in party activities,” the party said.
The party added that, despite having been an ally of the party leader, the Juja legislator has not accompanied Gachagua to any public function in the last six months, often giving a range of excuses.
DCP also alleged that his colleagues had grown apprehensive about his loyalty after learning that he had reportedly been recruited by President William Ruto to monitor the party’s movements in exchange for slowing down the prosecution of 15 criminal cases, including land fraud, forgery of academic certificates, and self-abduction.
The party accused Koimburi of lying about a police abduction a few months ago, which was later revealed to have been staged.

Further, the party revealed the reason that might have led Koimburi to defect to President Ruto’s camp.
According to the statement, Koimburi had requested a private meeting with the party leader on January 12, 2026, expressing frustration that his former competitor, Aloise Kinyanjui, had been welcomed into DCP and allowed to greet constituents in Juja. Koimburi allegedly demanded direct nomination for the 2027 General Elections, exemption from public functions with Gachagua, and the removal of Kinyanjui from the party.
The party said Gachagua rejected Koimburi’s demands, explaining that DCP is a democratic party and all candidates must go through free and fair nominations supervised by the National Elections Board. However, the party leader allowed Koimburi to skip public functions while he felt uncomfortable attending them.
Koimburi confirmed he would attend a DCP MPs’ retreat this weekend.
At the same time, the DCP party wished Koimburi success in his party of choice and reaffirmed its commitment to transparent party nominations for the 2027 General Elections.
“Our party leader remains grateful to Hon. Koimburi for his support during the impeachment and wishes him well. All aspirants intending to contest under the DCP banner will enjoy free, fair, and transparent nominations,” read the statement.

A statement from DCP was released a day after Koimburi declared his allegiance to President William Ruto, moving away from his former support for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Koimburi explained that his decision was motivated by what he referred to as “conmanship” and internal betrayal within the DCP leadership. He accused the party of allowing local political rivals to undermine his leadership in his own constituency.
“I was a diehard supporter of Gachagua. I even faced imprisonment for him and respected him deeply. However, the moment he accepted money to turn my opponent against me in Juja, I lost faith in him,” said Koimburi.
