NPS Swings to Action After Viral CCTV Shows Police Beat Youths Playing Pool

Share

The National Police Service (NPS) has launched an investigation after a CCTV video circulated on social media showed police officers allegedly beating young people playing pool in Nandi County.

The footage, which reportedly captured the incident on January 10, 2026, drew widespread public outrage, prompting the Inspector General of Police to order a comprehensive review.

“The National Police Service is appalled by what has been depicted and unequivocally condemns such barbaric behaviour which has no place in a civilized society,” the NPS said in a statement.

The Service noted that the conduct in the video violated the National Police Service Act, the Code of Conduct for Police Officers, and fundamental human rights principles.

The Inspector General has tasked the Internal Affairs Unit with finalizing the investigation within three days.

National Police Service on Police Conduct

The NPS also explained that the incident was isolated and does not reflect the standards or training of the wider police force.

“This isolated incident does not reflect the values, standards, and training of the Service,” the statement said. “Service to the people must at all times remain courteous, respectful, and professional.”

CCTV footage circulating online on the incident on the night of Sunday, January 10 at 11:51 pm, shows at least 10 police officers from Nandi Hills Police Station, armed with guns and rungus, storming the pool center where several young men were playing.

According to the IPOA report on Friday, 16, 2026, the oversight body moved to action following the circulation of the video on social media, which appears to capture the violent encounter.

“The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has taken cognisance of a video circulating on social media that allegedly depicts police officers assaulting a group of young men who were engaged in a game of pool in Nandi Hills, Nandi County, on the night of 10th January 2026,” IPOA said on a post.

As seen in the footage, the officers order the men to lie flat on the ground before brutally roughing them up as they demand identification documents, where they are heard instructing them to place the documents in their mouths as they question them on how they are at such late hours.

IPOA Response

The Authority condemns any use of unnecessary and unwarranted force in policing, calls for calm as it undertakes investigations, and reaffirms its commitment to impartial inquiries and the promotion of accountability and professionalism within the National Police Service.

The authority further said updates will be communicated upon the conclusion of the preliminary investigations.

“The Authority condemns any use of unnecessary and unwarranted force in policing,” Chairperson Hassan stated, reaffirming a commitment to “accountability and professionalism within the National Police Service.

A Call for Formal Complaints and Local Leadership

The Authority notes that prior to the video being posted online, no complaint had been lodged regarding the incident, and calls upon members of the public to make formal complaints whenever such incidents occur.

Nandi County senator Samson Cherargei cited Article 244 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, which mandates the National Police Service to respect human rights, promote professionalism, integrity and foster good relations with the public.

“I want to strongly condemn these acts of police brutality, criminality and abuse of human rights perpetuated by police officers in Nandi Hills town, Nandi county, to peace-loving youth whose only mistake was playing a pool game,” Cherargei posted on X account.

Nandi County Governor Stephen K. Sang also strongly condemned the actions, characterizing the incident as a “gross violation of the constitutional rights and dignity of citizens.”

“The County Government of Nandi will not countenance police brutality in any form,” Governor Sang stated. “Our communities deserve policing that protects life, upholds dignity, and respects the rule of law; not violence, brutality, and lawlessness masquerading as law enforcement”.
