Update: Seven people die after trailer rams into three 14-seater matatus at Diatomite area in Gilgil, Nakuru-Nairobi Highway, Sub-County police commander Wilston Mwakio confirms.
Tragedy struck along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway on Monday afternoon, January 19, when a trailer lost control and collided head-on with a 14-seater matatu near Kikopey, leaving three people feared dead and several others injured.
According to preliminary reports, the trailer veered off its lane and rammed into the matatu traveling in the opposite direction.
Some passengers were trapped in the wreckage, prompting a swift response from local rescue teams and emergency services.
Onlookers immediately began rescue efforts, attempting to drag the heavy trailer off the crushed PSV, which still had occupants inside.

The photos seen by Hivileo show the aftermath of a serious road accident involving a trailer and a white matatu.
The matatu is severely crushed and lying on its side beneath the trailer’s large container, which appears to have toppled or veered off the road.
Several people, some wearing reflective vests, are inspecting the wreckage and appear to be trying to access the vehicle.

The scene is on a sloped roadside, and the impact seems to have trapped passengers inside the matatu.
Authorities are on the scene assessing the situation, and the exact cause of the accident is under investigation. Motorists are urged to exercise caution along the highway as recovery and emergency operations continue.

According to witnesses, the trailer veered off the road and collided with an oncoming PSV. The force of the impact, combined with the weight of the lorry, pushed the matatu off the road.
Emergency responders have since been deployed at the scene to contain the situation.
