The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has responded to a shooting incident allegedly involving some police officers from Karatina Police Station, Mathira East Sub-County, within Nyeri County.
In a statement, IPOA Chairman Issack Hassan said the incident occurred at around 11:00 p.m. on January 18, 2025, in Karatina Town.
He stated that George Gathu Matheri was fatally shot following a brief confrontation with police officers who were on patrol.
Hassan said the suspected officer has been arrested and is currently in custody awaiting arraignment.
“The police officer suspected to have shot the late Mr. Matheri has so far been arrested and detained for further processing to be arraigned in court,” he said.
IPOA said following Matheri’s death, heightened tension in the area where the residents barricaded the Nairobi-Karatina highway and paralysed the smooth flow of traffic, as well as vandalising property of unknown value.
Hassan said IPOA has already dispatched a Rapid Response Team from Nyeri Regional Office to commence investigations and gather all relevant information to establish the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.
IPOA has so far seized the scene of the incident and is collecting crucial evidence for forensic and ballistic analysis.
