A close ally of KANU Chairman Gideon Moi, Tony Gachoka, has revealed that the KANU party will field Gideon Moi as its flagbearer in the 2027 General Election.
In a statement, the veteran journalist said the KANU chairman will vie against President William Ruto, dismissing claims that the party would support the incumbent.
Responding to an article published by the Daily Nation, an outlet of the Nation Media Group, Gachoka insisted that KANU will not back President Ruto but will instead field its own candidate.
“Today’s Nation headline attempting to paint KANU as part of the broad-based government is totally false. KANU will field Hon. Gideon Moi for president in 2027, which will divide the Rift Valley, making it difficult for Ruto,” said Gachoka.
Tony Gachoka alleged that a narrative of the KANU Chairman being part of the Broad Based Governmnt started being peddled after former President Uhuru Kenyatta visited Kabarak University, saying he is not surprised.
For a while, there have been recent speculations and media reports indicating a potential fallout or breakdown in the political alliance between Gideon Moi and President William Ruto, even after Moi’s withdrawal from the Baringo Senatorial by-election in October 2025 following their State House meeting.

According to an article published by the Daily Nation in early January, sources suggest that the initial truce, which involved Moi stepping aside in exchange for development commitments and a broader working relationship, has faced challenges due to unfulfilled promises, lack of appointments for KANU allies, and whispers of betrayal are emerging from within KANU circles.
Currently, the following individuals have publicly declared their intention to vie for the presidency in Kenya’s 2027 general election, seeking to unseat President William Ruto, with the latest entrant being Eliud Owalo, who resigned as Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Delivery and Government Efficiency in the Office of the President:
