Share

The Executive Office of the President has rolled out new assignments in the Foreign Service of the Republic of Kenya within the framework of the completion of term limits for the serving ambassadors.

The new assignments came in the form of notification in the ‘Notification of Presidential Action No. II of 2026.’

The matter was confirmed through a statement, where it was stated, “His Excellency the President has this afternoon sanctioned changes within the nation’s Foreign Service,” considering the need for the filling of gaps that have been caused by the expiration of the terms of the country’s ambassadors.

Reassignments Necessitated by Vacancies

Reassignments were necessitated by vacancies arising from the completion of the terms of service of serving Ambassadors.

By making this clarification, changes in the government’s ambassadors are presented as regular diplomatic management and not as a political turn.

By dint of the presidential action, the government confirmed that serving heads of Kenya’s missions abroad have been reassigned to new stations.

The statement reads, “By dint of this presidential action, the following serving Heads of Kenya’s missions abroad have been reassigned as stated,” outlining the specific postings affected.

High Commissioner to Uganda

Under the High Commissioner category, Ambassador Ababu Namwamba has been reposted to Kampala, Uganda.

The advert positions the ambassador in one of the most strategic Kenyan diplomatic missions, given the value that can be placed on the Kenyan-Ugandan bilateral relationship.

However, the Ugandan government remains an important trading partner, along with a regional ally, through the Kampala Mission that is pivotal in ensuring that the economic, political, as well as the security interests of the Republic of Kenya are represented through the East African Community.

Ambassador to Belgium and European Union

Within the cadre of ambassadors, Joash Maangi has been reassigned to Brussels, Belgium, where he will serve as the Kenyan Ambassador to the European Union.

This is an important assignment considering the fact that the European Union is a significant development partner and trading bloc for Kenya.

The posting places the Ambassador in the position to directly interact with the EU institutions in the areas of trade, climate, and development financing, all of which have become increasingly crucial in Kenya’s foreign relations agenda.

In conclusion, the press release states, “the changes take effect immediately,” thereby implying the sense of urgency in these reshuffles.
