Kenya’s infrastructure landscape is set to be transformed as the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) reports that construction of the 150-metre Tana River Bridge is in its advanced stages.
The project, positioned along the Ukasi–Garissa–Modika (A3) Road, is designed to replace the ageing 43-year-old crossing and improve the transport link between the Coast, Eastern, and North Eastern regions of the country.
KeNHA’s leadership said the new bridge is expected to unlock trading potential, enhance the movement of goods, and improve safety for road users.
“This transformative project is set to boost regional trade, enhance economic activities, and ensure seamless connectivity to the North Eastern Region,” the authority stated, noting that improved infrastructure often catalyzes broader economic opportunities.
The bridge will also reduce congestion and minimise accident risks for motorists and passengers alike.
The project was officially launched in February 2025 by President William Ruto, who underscored its importance as part of the government’s push to strengthen economic corridors and integrate marginalised regions into national development plans.
The construction contract was structured with a 24-month implementation timeline, with an estimated completion set for December 2026.

This bridge, which is about five kilometres before Garissa town, has been perceived for a long time as a critical logistics point in the movement of goods to and from Kenya’s northeastern counties.
“It marks a major infrastructural milestone for the North Eastern region,” said the Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Raymond Omollo, in a past address.
“The new bridge will ease movement, improve road safety, and strengthen the corridor that links communities to essential services,” Omollo added.
The PS also noted that the existing structure will be repurposed for lighter traffic, including pedestrians, motorcycle taxis, and livestock, once the new facility becomes operational.

The Tana River Bridge construction process will be completed at a price of estimated KSh1.77 billion; the information confirmed by the concerned regional authorities who monitor the delivery of the projects.
The structure also meets the requirements of modern engineering for the highest traffic needs.
KeNHA also made announcements outlining the disruption that will be experienced temporarily along the A3 corridor for the installation of the girder and the heavy work that was expected.
