Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also the president’s son, has banned opposition leader Robert Kyangulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, from participating in future elections.
In a series of statements issued on his social media platform on Thursday, January 23, 2026, General Kainerugaba explained that the decision was made in the best interests of national security and the common good of common wealth.
“Whether Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu is in the country or not, I, as Chief of Defence Forces, in the interests of national security and for the good of the commonwealth, ban him from any further participation in the electoral exercises of Uganda,” he stated.
The General reiterated that his orders carry the authority of the State’s Commander-in-Chief.
He also threatened that Ugandan citizens who support the opposition leader would face consequences.
“From now on, anyone who declares Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, as his/her political leader must be annulled,” the Army Chief declared.

Additionally, General Kainerugaba vowed to capture Bobi Wine, who has gone into hiding since President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner in the recently concluded presidential elections.
Since the opposition leader’s disappearance, General Kainerugaba has issued multiple statements, some of which threaten to eliminate him. These remarks have drawn widespread condemnation both in Uganda and internationally.
Organisations such as the World Liberty Congress have condemned the statements as “criminal threats” from a powerful official with a history of political repression. Human rights groups like Amnesty International and the UN Human Rights Office have raised alarms about the “brutal campaign of repression” and the excessive use of force against dissenters.
Election observers, including former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who is leading an observer mission, denounced the intimidation and abductions of opposition members, stating such actions “eroded public trust” in the electoral process.
Bobi Wine remains in hiding following a military raid on his home and has rejected the threats and ultimatum issued by General Kainerugaba for him to surrender himself to the Uganda authorities.
He accused the General of orchestrating the raid to harm him. Although General Kainerugaba deleted many of his controversial posts, they continue to spark debate online.

Bobi Wine has firmly rejected the results of the January 15, 2026, elections, in which President Museveni was declared the winner with 72% of the vote. Speaking from hiding, Bobi Wine has labelled the official tallies as “fake” and illegitimate.
He claims to have evidence of widespread electoral fraud, including incidents of “ballot stuffing” and videos of officials filling in ballots in favour of the incumbent. He has also confirmed that he will not challenge the results in court, citing the Ugandan judiciary as “captured” and lacking independence.
