Kenya Met Warns of Rainfall and Strong Winds in Select Areas

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecasted rainfall and strong winds in some parts of the country.

In its forecast published on Friday, January 23, 2026, Kenya Met provided a five-day weather outlook for the period from Saturday, January 24, to Wednesday, January 28, 2026, highlighting regions that are expected to experience rainfall and strong winds.

According to the forecast, mainly sunny and dry conditions are expected over much of the country.

However, occasional rainfall may occur in certain areas, particularly the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley region, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the southeastern lowlands. Strong northeasterly to southeasterly winds, exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s), are expected over northwestern, northeastern, and coastal regions.

In the Highlands west of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley, the weatherman predicts that mornings will likely have sunny intervals during the forecast period, while showers will dominate in the afternoons, except on January 24 and January 25, when afternoons are expected to have sunny intervals.

Nights will mostly experience showers in a few places, except on January 24 and January 25, when nights are expected to be partly cloudy.

Areas within these regions include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot Counties.

In the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi and its environs, KMD predicts mornings will be cloudy, breaking into sunny intervals, while afternoons will be dominated by sunny conditions, except on Monday, January 26, and Tuesday, January 27. Nights will be partly cloudy throughout the forecast period. Other areas within this region include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi Counties.

Southeastern Lowlands Weather Forecast

For the southeastern lowlands, covering Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta Counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, the forecast indicates mornings will have sunny intervals throughout the period, while afternoons may experience a chance of showers over a few places near Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Nights will be partly cloudy for the entire forecast duration.

Elsewhere, Turkana and Samburu Counties, which are in the northwestern region, both mornings and afternoons are expected to have sunny intervals throughout the forecast period, while nights will be partly cloudy.

In the northeastern region, which includes Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo Counties, mornings and afternoons are also expected to be sunny, with nights remaining partly cloudy.

In the coastal region, encompassing Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale Counties, as well as coastal parts of Tana River County, mornings and afternoons will have sunny intervals, with nights generally being partly cloudy.
