IG Kanja Issues Security Update After Suspected Al Shabaab Attack

The National Police Service (NPS) has responded after a suspected Al Shabaab attack in Hulugho town, Garissa County.

In a statement, NPS said it is responding to the incident in which a chief and a teacher were killed.

“The National Police Service (NPS) is aware of and is actively responding to a security incident that occurred earlier today, Monday, 26th January 2025, in the Hulugho area of Garissa County, in which a chief and a teacher were killed,” reads part of the statement.

NPS said a multi-agency security team is actively pursuing the perpetrators of the cowardly act.

“The area has been secured, and an operation is ongoing to apprehend those responsible and ensure they face the full force of the law,” NPS stated.

Public Safety Guaranteed

NPS has increased security patrols and operations in Hulugho and across Garissa County to ensure the safety of residents.

The Service said protecting local communities remains the top priority of security forces.

“We understand the anxiety and concern such incidents cause residents and all Kenyans. We strongly wish to reassure the public, particularly in Hulugho, Garissa County, that their safety and security remain our utmost priority. We have immediately heightened security patrols and operations in the region and its environs,” NPS added.

Additionally, it has urged the public to remain calm and vigilant, and to cooperate with the security agencies.

“We also appeal to anyone with information regarding this incident which may assist the ongoing investigation, to contact their nearest police station or use the toll-free numbers: 999, 911, or 112. Information can also be provided anonymously via #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203, or on WhatsApp 0709 570 000. All information will be treated with confidentiality.”

NPS said it remains unwavering in its commitment to protect and serve the public.

“We will not be deterred by criminal acts and are resolute in safeguarding the lives and property of all Kenyans, residents and visitors,” added the statement.
