East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga spoke about her future in Kenyan politics, her relationship with President William Ruto, and the role she sees for herself following the death of her father, the late former ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Reflecting on the difficult period since her father’s passing, Winnie Odinga said the only senior leader who has personally checked on and supported her family is President Ruto.
She praised him for the respect shown to Raila Odinga during and after his funeral.
“Since my father passed on, the only senior leadership that has come to check up and take care of our family has been President Ruto,” she said, adding:
“I must also be grateful for the honour and respect the President accorded my father when he passed on.”
She stressed that it is possible to both like and disagree with someone politically, yet still be grateful for support.
Winnie addressed her commitment to serving the country in whichever capacity was needed.
She noted that while she currently serves at the regional level through EALA, her “heart always belongs in Kenya.”
“When called upon, I serve the country. I am serving the country at a regional level. My heart always belongs in Kenya; Kenya owns my heart,” she said.
