The University of Eldoret (UoE) is a public university in Kenya located in Eldoret town, Uasin Gishu County, about 9 km along the Eldoret-Ziwa road.
It is one of the 22 public universities established to expand access to higher education, particularly in science, agriculture, natural resources, and technology.
The institution traces its roots to 1946, when it was started by white settlers as a Large Scale Farmers Training Centre, with a focus on agricultural extension and training.
In 1984, the centre was transformed into Moi Teachers’ Training College, offeringa Diploma in Science Teachers Training, as part of Kenya’s expansion of teacher education.
Facing the double intake crisis in Kenyan universities, Moi University absorbed the college in 1990 as a campus named Chepkoilel Campus, where it continued to offer programmes in natural, basic, and applied sciences.
Continued growth and demand for higher learning led to a legal transformation: through Legal Notice No. 125 of 13 August 2010, the campus was elevated to a University College under the name Chepkoilel University College, a constituent college of Moi University.
Subsequently, UoE gained full autonomy when it was awarded a Charter in March 2013, officially becoming the University of Eldoret.
Today, the University of Eldoret is governed under its statutory Charter and overseen by a University Council responsible for strategic oversight.
The ceremonial head of the university is the Chancellor, Prof. Judith Mbula Bahemuka, while the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Thomas Kimeli Cheruiyot, is the chief executive officer in charge of academic, administrative, and operational leadership, having taken office on 1st September 2023.
Prof. Cheruiyot took over from the founding Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Teresia A. O. Akenga, who had been at the helm of the university from 2013 to 2023.

The university’s main campus sits on expansive grounds roughly 9 km from Eldoret town centre on the Eldoret-Ziwa Road in Uasin Gishu County.
It also provides lecture halls, laboratories, research farms, libraries, and administrative facilities.
In January 2014, UoE launched the Eldoret Town Campus in MUSCO Towers within Eldoret’s central business district.
The move was to broaden access to professional programmes, postgraduate training, and flexible learning options such as part-time and short courses.
The university also maintains liaison and outreach offices.
There have been plans and agreements to expand into other regions, such as the proposed College of Health Sciences in Iten, initially planned to offer nursing and allied health programmes.
