Detectives have uncovered a “butchery” in Kasarani that was serving up far more than just meat.
According to the notice by the Director of Criminal Investigations, DCI, a local trader turned his business into a clandestine hub for cannabis-infused snacks and narcotics.
The operation, led by the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) and the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), targeted “East Butchery” in the Marurui area following a tip-off that the shop was a front for a sophisticated drug distribution network.
“In the ongoing crackdown on narcotics trafficking, detectives from the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) and the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) have arrested a Kasarani man who had turned a butchery into a clandestine drug outlet,” DCI Kenya posted on their X account.

The suspect, Paul Mwangi Karanja, operator of East Butchery in Marurui area, was apprehended after detectives acted on credible intelligence indicating that the premises were being used as a front to peddle cannabis while flying under the radar.
The DCI observed that the use of edibles, such as cookies and mabuyu, was a deliberate strategy to “beat the system” and sell to younger or unsuspecting customers without attracting the notice of routine patrols.
Upon the raid, a substantial amount of drugs, including 81 rolls of bhang, 18 cookies, 13 sim-sim rolls, and five tiny mabuyu containers laced with cannabis, were found during the butchery raid.
“A raid of the butchery led to the recovery of a sizeable haul of narcotics, including 81 rolls of bhang, 18 cookies, 13 sim-sim rolls and five small mabuyu containers, all laced with cannabis, an elaborate attempt to beat the system and evade detection,” DCI Kenya posted on their X account.

The DCI further stated that in a similar operation, ANU detectives stopped a matatu headed for Nairobi at a roadblock set up in Limuru, Kiambu County, based on additional information.
Detectives searched every passenger thoroughly and discovered a woman with a brown suitcase that contained three packages of bhang that were carefully wrapped in yellow cellophane tape.
“A thorough search of passengers led to the arrest of Judith Faith Oriende, who was found in possession of a brown suitcase containing three packages of bhang, neatly wrapped in yellow cellotape. All the suspects are currently in custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment. The recovered narcotics have been secured as exhibits,” DCI Kenya posted on their X account.
