Ministry Breaks Silence After Tragic KUPPET Teachers’ Accident That Left One Dead & Several Injured

Basic Education PS Julius Bitok has addressed the tragic road accident along Murang’a Road involving a matatu and teachers who were earlier involved in  KUPPET Nairobi Branch elections at the City Primary School on the evening of Saturday, January 31, 2026.

In a statement, Bitok conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family of the teacher who has sadly lost life in the incident.

“We share in your pain and stand with you during this moment of profound loss. We extend our thoughts and prayers to teachers and other individuals who sustained injuries. We wish them a speedy recovery. We offer a hand of solidarity to the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), the teaching fraternity, and the education community at large during this difficult time,” Bitok said.

He stated that the Ministry will continue to monitor the situation closely as they gather detailed information surrounding the circumstances of the incident in collaboration with the relevant authorities.

“May God grant comfort to the bereaved family and strength to all the affected.”

KUPPET Teachers Accident

One person was killed, and at least 14 others were injured on Saturday evening after a public service vehicle (PSV) lost control and rammed into pedestrians in Ngara, Nairobi.

The accident occurred at around 5 p.m. outside Nairobi City Primary School, where teachers had gathered after participating in Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) branch elections.

According to police, the victims were standing outside the school compound when the Githurai-bound bus, operated by Runka Sacco, veered off the road and crashed into the crowd.

Authorities confirmed that a teacher died in the incident, while dozens of others sustained injuries of varying severity and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Police have launched investigations to establish the cause of the crash as traffic officers work to determine whether mechanical failure or driver error led to the tragic incident.

TSC CEO

The CEO of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Dr Evaleen Mitei, and other officials are currently in various hospitals in Nairobi monitoring the progress of teachers injured in the accident.

The teachers are currently at Agakhan, Nairobi West, St. Scholastica, Matter Hospital, and Kenyatta National Hospital.

The tragedy happened during KUPPET Nairobi branch elections when a bus lost control and rammed on the teachers who were queuing to vote for their leaders.
