The United States government entered a partial shutdown on Saturday, January 31, 2026, after Congress missed the midnight deadline to approve a 2026 budget.
The shutdown came hours after the Senate passed a revised package of government funding bills, but the House of Representatives is not expected to vote on the measure until Monday, February 2, at the earliest. This delay triggered a temporary lapse in funding for parts of the federal government.
The delay in budget approval follows a bitter standoff over President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and the recent killing of two protesters in Minneapolis by federal immigration agents, which sparked Democratic objections and derailed negotiations over new funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
“Instead of going after drug smugglers, child predators, and human traffickers, the Trump Administration is wasting valuable resources targeting peaceful protestors in Chicago and Minneapolis.
This Administration continues to make Americans less safe,” said Senate Democratic Minority Whip Dick Durbin.
Federal departments began implementing shutdown plans on the night of Friday, January 30, though congressional leaders from both parties said the Senate’s action makes a prolonged disruption unlikely.

If the House approves the funding package as expected early next week, operations will be restored within days, limiting the impact on federal services, contractors, and employees.
However, if the shutdown lasts beyond a few days, tens of thousands of federal workers could face unpaid leave or be forced to work without pay until funding is restored.
