Outrage as Police Officers Raid X Offices in France

Share

French authorities conducted a raid on the Paris headquarters of X on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

The Paris prosecutors’ office said this action is part of an ongoing preliminary inquiry into several criminal allegations, including the distribution of child pornography and the spread of sexually explicit deepfakes.

The investigation was initiated in January 2025 and according to official statements, investigators are exploring the platform’s potential “complicity” in several illegal activities.

Additionally, on April 20, prosecutors requested “voluntary interviews” with Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X from 2023 to 2025.

According to the statement, platform X employees were also called in that same week in April to testify as witnesses.

X has described the investigation as an assault on free speech but has not yet responded.

Paris prosecutors’ office while taking to their page confirmed the ongoing searches and said it was leaving the platform while calling on followers to join on other social media.

“At this stage, the conduct of the investigation is based on a constructive approach, with the aim of ultimately ensuring that the X platform complies with French law, as it operates on the national territory,” prosecutors said in a statement.

The Grok Controversy

A French lawmaker’s allegations that biased algorithms on X were likely to have distorted the operation of an automated data processing system prompted the initial opening of the investigation.

Recently, sexualized images created and altered on Musk’s social media platform using its AI tool Grok have drawn a lot of criticism.

The pictures, which were frequently created using actual photos of women without their permission, sparked a flurry of criticism from politicians, online safety advocates, and victims.

Eventually, the business stepped in to stop the practice.

Because of the images, the European Commission announced in late January that it was looking into its parent company, xAI.
