Trump Administration Orders US Citizens to Leave Iran Immediately

Share

The administration of President Donald Trump has ordered US citizens living in Iran to leave the country with immediate effect.

In a statement dated Friday, February 6, 2026, the US State Department issued a notice compelling its citizens to vacate Iran.

“Leave Iran now. Have a plan for departing Iran that does not rely on US government help,” the notice read.

The State Department urged US citizens to consider departing Iran by land through Armenia or Türkiye, as airlines continue to limit or cancel flights to and from the country. Alternatively, citizens were advised to check directly with airlines for updates.

According to the State Department, the decision was informed by ongoing security concerns, including increased security measures, road closures, public transportation disruptions, and internet blockages. The Government of Iran continues to restrict access to mobile, landline, and national internet networks.

For those unable to leave, the Trump administration advised citizens to find a secure location within their residence or another safe building, and to ensure they have adequate supplies of food, water, medication, and other essential items.

US citizens were also urged to avoid demonstrations, keep a low profile, and remain aware of their surroundings as they prepare to depart.

Additionally, they were advised to monitor local media for breaking news, remain flexible in adjusting their travel plans, keep their phones charged, maintain communication with family and friends, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates.

The State Department’s directive comes amid nationwide protests in Iran that began in late December 2025 and continued into January 2026. During this period, President Trump warned that if Iranian authorities “start killing people,” the United States would “hit them very hard.”

However, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stated on February 1, 2026, that any U.S. attack would trigger a regional war.

The directive also comes amid planned negotiations, with senior U.S. and Iranian officials scheduled to hold talks in Muscat, Oman, beginning February 7, 2026. The discussions will focus primarily on Iran’s nuclear program. The U.S. delegation will be led by Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and may include Jared Kushner, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will represent Iran.

These talks mark the first formal negotiations since U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in 2025, amid sustained high tensions.

President Trump has publicly stated that Ayatollah Khamenei “should be very worried” about potential US actions, stressing U.S. military readiness in the region.

If the talks fail, outcomes could include heightened military escalation, including renewed US strikes on Iranian targets, as Trump has hinted at further action should Iran advance its nuclear or ballistic missile programs.
