Why Trump Posted Racist Meme Targeting Obama and Michelle

Share

US President Donald Trump has triggered controversy after sharing a video on his Truth Social platform that appears to include racist imagery targeting former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

The video, posted on Friday, February 6, 2026, runs for about one minute and largely focuses on renewed claims questioning the integrity of the 2020 US presidential election, where President Trump lost to Joe Biden.

However, toward the end of the clip, images appear showing Barack Obama and Michelle Obama smiling while depicted in a jungle setting, with their faces edited onto monkey bodies.

Alleged Racist Memes Posted by Trump Have Ignited Public Backlash

The imagery has ignited backlash, with critics saying it reflects racist portrayals long used by white supremacist groups to demean Black people in the United States. Monkey symbolism, in particular, has historically been condemned as a racist caricature when used to portray people of African descent.

California Governor Gavin Newsom strongly condemned the post, calling it “disgusting behaviour by the President.”

“Every single Republican must denounce this. Now,” Newsom said.

Other Americans also weighed in on the controversial post. One American citizen wrote that the post appeared to combine election conspiracy theories with racist imagery targeting the former US president and first lady.

“So, just to confirm the ‘president’ is posting election fraud propaganda followed by racist memes of a former U.S. President and First Lady,” the user said. “And the Republicans in Congress will do nothing, because they believe this is acceptable behaviour for a U.S. president.”

Most of the video Trump shared revisits claims about the 2020 election. In the clip, a narrator alleges that, following a court order, investigators in Michigan obtained forensic access to a DS-200 vote tabulator and discovered a 4G wireless chip embedded in the machine’s motherboard.

The video further claims that voting machines transmitted election data via modems and suggests irregularities in five key battleground states where vote counting was briefly halted before resuming with results that favoured then-candidate Joe Biden.

As of publication, Trump had not issued a clarification or apology regarding the video. Former President Barrack Obama and Michelle have also not publicly responded.
