IPOA Swings into Action After 21-Year-Old KMTC Student Killed in Huruma

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has today, February 9 2026 deployed a Rapid Response Team to investigate a fatal shooting that occurred on  February 7 2026 in the Huruma area of Nairobi County.

The incident resulted in the death of a 21-year-old student, Ms. Sheril Adhiambo, allegedly during a police pursuit of robbery suspects.

According to IPOA, investigators from its Nairobi Regional Office are actively gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analysing samples and exhibits to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting.

The findings will inform recommendations to relevant authorities.

 IPOA Message to Family 

IPOA extended condolences to the family of Ms. Adhiambo, called for public calm, and assured both the public and the bereaved family of its commitment to conducting an independent, impartial, and thorough investigation to establish culpability and ensure accountability.

“We are committed to ensuring that all investigations are fair, transparent, and lead to accountability where necessary,” said Ms. Ann Wanjiku Mwangi, Vice Chairperson of IPOA.

The killing has sparked outrage among residents and human rights activists, who have described the incident as yet another case of excessive use of force.

Public Demand Justice 

Community organisations, including the Mukuru Justice Centre, have demanded swift legal action against the officer involved.

On social media, the hashtag #JusticeForSheryl has gained momentum, with users calling for policing reforms and stronger oversight mechanisms.
