Autopsy Reveals What Killed KMTC Student Sheryl Adhiambo

Share

An autopsy on a 21-year-old Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student Sheryl Adhiambo, who was killed by a bullet wound in the head, has revealed that she indeed died from a gunshot wound to the head, further fueling public outrage over her killing.

The student was shot on Saturday night, triggering public protests that have persisted for two days as people demand details concerning circumstances leading to her killing.

Adhiambo, a student at KMTC, had reportedly completed her examinations and was in the area to assist her mother with a fish business when the fatal shooting occurred.

Her death quickly became a flashpoint for anger, with demonstrations erupting as questions mounted about police conduct and the use of live ammunition during crowd control.

An autopsy conducted at the City Mortuary by two pathologists established the precise cause of death, confirming that the young student sustained a fatal gunshot injury to the head.

The findings have now placed the incident firmly under the spotlight of independent investigators and human rights advocates.

Autopsy Findings and Medical Conclusions

According to the post-mortem report, the bullet entered through the left side of Adhiambo’s head and exited from the back, causing catastrophic damage.

The pathologists said the trajectory of the bullet ruptured the cerebral cavity, leaving no chance of survival.

Pathologists Grace Midigo and Simon Omuok, who conducted the examination, concluded that the injuries were immediately fatal.

“The body had a single bullet wound in the head,” Midigo said.

They further stated that the severity of the injury meant Adhiambo, “could not have survived the trauma,” confirming that death resulted directly from the gunshot wound.

Officials from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) were also present at the autopsy as part of their ongoing investigations into this incident.

IPOA Investigation and Calls for Justice

As soon as the cause of death was confirmed, activists converged at the City Mortuary, pressing their demand for justice by calling for accountability from the officer involved in the shooting.

IPOA confirmed that a Rapid Response Team was sent to look into the case, saying that investigators are collecting evidence.

In a statement, IPOA said its officers are, “gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analysing available exhibits” to establish the full circumstances surrounding Adhiambo’s death.

Police Account of Events

The National Police Service (NPS) provided its version of events leading up to the shooting.

According to police, a complainant reported earlier that day at Huruma Police Station that he had been attacked by five young men known to him, robbed of a silver chain and Ksh 1,800, and threatened with death.

Officers responding to the report arrested two suspects, with further investigations leading to the arrest of two more later in the evening.

Police said that during the second arrest, one of the suspects raised an alarm, attracting a crowd of youths who allegedly began throwing stones at officers in an attempt to disrupt the operation.

The NPS stated that officers fired warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd, during which Adhiambo was fatally shot.

The service urged residents to allow due process to take its course and to refrain from further lawlessness to help restore calm as investigations continue.
